Inter Terminals Sweden (ITS) initiates FEED Study for open access CO2-infrastructure at the Port of Södertälje

23 June 2025

ITS, in close collaboration with Port of Södertälje, has taken a decisive step towards establishing an open and flexible infrastructure for captured CO₂ in the Mälardalen region. The project begins with a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) and permitting process to enable intermediate storage of regionally captured CO₂ and loading onto vessels for further transport to permanent storage or utilization.

“This initiative marks an important milestone for Inter Terminals, positioning us as a key enabler in the emerging CO₂-logistics market in Mälardalen, says Johan Zettergren, Managing Director of ITS. The objective is to offer an open and accessible solution for all regional companies aiming to capture CO₂ and seeking efficient solutions for for storage or for reuse.

Måns Frostell, CEO of Södertälje Port, comments on the initiative: “This joint initiative further strengthens Södertälje Port’s position as a hub for sustainable freight logistics and the future infrastructure for energy management in the Stockholm region.”

CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) and CCU (Carbon Capture and Utilization) are crucial technologies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating negative emissions. Technologies for capturing carbon dioxide from industrial processes and power plants before it reaches the atmosphere and then transporting it to safe permanent storage or utilization – for example, in the production of e-fuels – contribute to achieving both national and global climate goals.

The project concept is scalable and supports a phased implementation, adaptable to the development of the CCUS market in the region over the coming years. ITS fully completed facility is expected to be ready and operational by 2030.
